Find information about the responsive classroom approach to teaching here.
Responsive classroom focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness.
In our classroom you will find these classroom practices which are the heart of the Responsive Classroom approach:
- Morning Meeting: Everyone in the classroom gathers in a circle for about twenty minutes at the beginning of each school day and participates in 4 components: greeting, sharing, group activity, and morning message.
- Classroom Rules: At the beginning of the school year, the students and I work together to name individual goals for the year and establish rules that will help everyone reach those goals. These rules are based off of the school rules "be safe, be responsible, and be a friend" but are specific to our own classroom.
- Calming Corner: This is a place that many students will visit this year. It is not a “punishment,” just a place where the child has time to think, calm down, and return to class when he or she feels ready. If your child was sent to the Calming Corner, do not be alarmed! I will communicate with parents personally when it is appropriate to do so.
- Closing Circle: A five- to ten-minute gathering at the end of the day that promotes reflection and celebration through participation in a brief activity or share.
